De-Clutter Before You Move Your Contents Into Self-Storage

When you’re moving or you’re putting the contents of your home into self-storage it’s a good idea to de-clutter before you start putting things in boxes. It will mean you’re not packing stuff that you don’t use or want, that’s accumulated over the years. Here are some tips to get you started.

Bags and Boxes

Get yourself some bags or boxes and begin room by room. This way you won’t feel overwhelmed and be tempted to give up. Organise the bags or boxes so that you have one or two for:

  • Things you want to keep
  • The charity shop
  • Stuff you want to sell
  • Items to throw away

Then make a start by emptying all your cupboards and drawers and putting each item in its corresponding bag or box. Look carefully at your belongings and ask yourself:

  • Do I use it?
  • Do I like it?
  • Do I need it?
  • Can someone else make better use of it?
  • Is it broken?
  • Do I want it in my new home, or is it worth storing?

Be ruthless. After all what’s the point of filling your new home with junk, or paying to store it? If you haven’t used something or worn an item of clothes in a long while the chances are that you don’t need it.

Cupboards & Drawers

Once you’ve emptied your cupboards and drawers give them a clean and only put back the stuff you intend to keep. You can use the extra space to find homes for things that are often left lying around so your rooms are tidier. Now make a start on bookcases and shelves.

Selling

Do you have things you want to sell?  Get it organised that night or the next day. Don’t leave it or you’ll end up tripping over the bag or the box in the hallway and then having to pack it for storage or take it with you.

Will it fit?

If you’re moving to a new home check to see that the furniture you have will fit. If the sofa’s too big or you don’t have room for your table and chairs make arrangements to give them to charity or advertise in your local paper.

Giving it Away

When giving away furniture, ask whoever’s having it to come and collect it the day before you are leaving your home so that you are able to use it up to the last minute.
